Today I would like to share something different with you. Many times blossoms are the same whether the images are taken in the greenhouse or outside in the field. Then there are those that you wonder if it is the same cultivar. Below is the same cultivar, the top image taken in the greenhouse today, April 1, 2012, and the second image is the same cultivar taken outside in the field in 2011. There is a marked difference.
I took one picture today of a named cultivar, Jeff Salter's H. 'Cimarron Rose' (2005). I really like the color, size and form of this daylily. I am using it in my red breeding program.

ReplyDeletePaul K. Lewis of Ohio commenting. I'm a friend of your buddy, Bill Waldrop's. Just discovered your blog and really enjoy your posts. This most recent post is a good example of how conditions affect the appearance of a daylily bloom. Sometimes a daylily will look amazing when it's really humid out, then look very average when it's cooler and less humid. I think there are big differences between greenhouse conditions and outdoor conditions. I like hybridizers that use several photographs to show what their blooms look like if the colors vary from day to day. Really enjoy you showing your seedlings from Wonder of it all. I never had the honor of getting to know Bob Carr, but I was able to buy Wonder of it all the year it came out. It is truly an amazing parent. I am just beginning to see the results as some of my Wonder of it all seedlings are maturing. I have one that is currently being guested over at Bill's. He wrote about it in one of his blogs. I really look forward to reading more of your entries. Great read.

ReplyDeleteThanks for looking at my blog. It is funny, some cultivars are the same in or out of the greenhouse. Others vary widely like the one shown. I notice the most difference in the toothy/fringy plants which show more tooth/fringe outside for me. They are much more subdued in the greenhouse. I really like WOIA as a parent, both pod and pollen. I have several seedlings that I am evaluating now and you will probably see some of them on my blog. Seems like all you have to do is walk past WOIA with pollen and a pod sets! Keep tuned . . .
